Hélène Blanchet – Making Pictures With fabric: A Retrospective

Textile artist, Hélène Blanchet is a self-taught folk artist who specializes in colourful art quilts made by hand. She has been making “fabric pictures” since she was a teenager.

A natural story-teller, Hélène brings her stories to life in the minutia of detail featured in every piece. For the past few years, a keen interest in pushing her boundaries has led her to experiment with abstraction, giving her work a fresh new twist.

A love of traditional textiles of all kinds has had a large influence on her work. She draws inspiration from these traditions, the natural world, family and her home-province, Nova Scotia.

Her award-winning quilts have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and are represented in several galleries in Nova Scotia.

Her first solo show “Prairie Days” toured throughout Nova Scotia in 2018 – 2019 and Manitoba in 2019 – 2021. It is scheduled to be hosted by the New Roxy Theatre in Edmonton in the fall of 2022.

Hélène is a Juried Artist Member of the Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA), Craft Nova Scotia, the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design and NB Craft. She is also the regional representative for SAQA – Atlantic Canada.
