Terry Aske: My Evolution as an Art Quilter
There is something wonderful about working with fabric – it is soft and flexible, and has both tactile and visual texture. Fabric provides shape and color to my work. Layering and quilting add texture and dimension.
My style is contemporary, and I create both realistic and abstract images. I use a variety of techniques, including machine-piecing, fusible appliqué, thread-sketching and free-motion-quilting. I delight in using commercial prints – such as plaids and florals – in unexpected ways. From a distance, viewers observe colors, shapes and values. As one draws nearer to the quilt, the prints add visual texture and interest.
I create art as a means of self-expression, but also as a way to connect and communicate with others. I enjoy exhibiting my work, and it makes me happy when viewers experience an emotional response to my work – even if it is not the response I intended!
