Prairie Rose Challenge

Each year, the past chair presents a challenge to the EDQG members. Those who participate have an opportunity to interpret the challenge, vie for one of several glorious ribbons, and share their spectacular creations with everyone in June.

The members then also get the chance to choose their favourite submission and a ribbon is awarded for “Viewer’s Choice’.  The Viewer’s Choice Ribbon is from the Canadian Quilters’ Association (CQA).

During the EDQG Festival of Quilts year, the Prairie Rose Quilt Show is a “show within a show” while in the non-Festival year, the show is held during the June banquet.

Some past challenges to inspire us were a scavenger hunt, “page 40” from a magazine, a “night out”, “home” that included a specific piece of fabric, “travel”, and many others.

2026 Challenge: Whodunit?

Inspired by the Game of Clue

Our theme for the Prairie Rose Challenge promises to be lots of fun.  The theme this year is “Whodunit?”

The Challenge: Create a quilt that captures the spirit of the classic board game Clue.

Design Prompts (Choose One or More)

Interpret the theme in any of the following ways:

Character-Inspired

  • Base your quilt on one of the iconic characters: Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, etc.
  • Use color, silhouette, or symbolic elements (e.g., a red rose for Miss Scarlet).

Room-Inspired

  • Design a quilt based on one of the mansion’s rooms: the Library, Conservatory, Billiard Room, etc.
  • Think textures, patterns – grids and blocks, or vintage wallpaper vibes.

Weapon-Inspired

  • Incorporate abstract or literal representations of the classic weapons: candlestick, rope, revolver, etc.

Mystery Narrative

  • Tell a story through your quilt. Who did it? Where? With what? Use visual clues to let viewers guess

If you would like some help with inspiration email pastchair@edqg.ca and I will draw cards for you – indicate character, room, weapon or all three.

In the game of Clue, players are detectives trying to solve a murder by identifying the killer, the murder weapon, and the crime scene location.

Rules & Guidelines

  • Must be 18″ x 24″, landscape or portrait.
  • Any technique is allowed: piecing, appliqué, embroidery, mixed media.
  • Must include three layers – top, batting or filler, and a backing and have a hanging sleeve.
  • Must include at least one recognizable element from the Clue universe.
  • Label the back with your name and your “solution” (e.g., “Mrs. Peacock in the Library with the Wrench”).
  • Quilts submitted to Past Chair (Melissa) on or before May 20, 2026
