Living with mental illness is a journey and a process. An emotional and physical roller-coaster that includes and involves loved ones, family and friends. In this artist talk, Manitoba-based fabric artist Cathie Ugrin presents her own experiences as a case study and talks about how the creation of her solo fibre art exhibit ‘Feeling from Without and Within’ uses art as a release and means to understanding.
Cathie Ugrin is a Manitoba based fabric artist whose works characterized by a rich and inventive use of colour, and unique approach to geometrical design. Her work has been accepted into numerous National Juried Shows and Exhibits, including the International Quilt Festival’s ‘Oh Canada’ USA Tour ending in Houston, TX; CQA’s Quilt Canada, La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum’s Fibre Arts International Juried Show in Washington, US; SAQA’s Exhibit ‘Colour with a U’ and the Grand National Fibre Art Exhibition ‘Crossroads’.


Cathie has studied with numerous international fabric and quilt artists continually expanding her technique and approach, while advancing her
growth as an artist. Her pieces have reached a broad audience and have found homes across Canada, the US, England, Finland, Italy, Peru and
Slovenia. Cathie is one of the founding members as well as the Exhibit/Events Coordinator of the Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba established in the fall of 2017. Collaborating with other artists/artist groups, lecturing and teaching complete her resume of fibre-related art activities. She is one of the recipients of the 2023 Manitoba Craft Council Bursary Award.
Cathie’s work is uniquely custom designed and she is available to discuss projects and commissions.
