Thank you for your support of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, North of 60 Project.  We are thrilled to announce that the sea container, carrying food and necessities arrived safely in Ulukhaktok in September. After leaving St Albert in May, the sea can was trucked 3500 km to Tuktoyaktuk, then on an ocean barge crossing the Beaufort Sea to Ulukhaktok on Victoria Island.  

In one of the attached photos, you can spot the blue sea container (painted with SSVP and flowers) on the barge, as it approached the Ulukhaktok wharf.  Also on that barge which arrives once a year are much needed modular homes, the annual supply of non perishables for the grocery stores, personal purchases such as ATV, boats, sleds, construction material, etc.  What is not on that barge is flown in for the rest of the year.  Another barge arrives soon with Ulukhaktok’s annual fuel supply.

Life in beautiful Ulukhaktok has been busy with cruise ships stopping by (Northwest Passage route) for a tour of the hamlet, art, crafts, drumming, music and sports demonstration.  Ulukhaktok hosts an annual golf tournament at their world’s most northerly golf course.  The sun does not set for two months May to July and as soon as school vacation begins, families head out on the land and coast, on their ATVs (family vehicle) or boats, to hunt whales, birds, muskox, caribou, fish, gather eggs, and pick berries.

Residents of Ulukhaktok are very appreciative and together with SSVP, send their thanks to all the donors and supporters of the North of 60 Project.  Their food bank shelves are stocked and other items distributed.  Everyone’s interest and generosity helped significantly with the cost of the food and the high cost of transportation to Tuktoyaktuk and on to Ulukhaktok.  Thank you for helping SSVP help those in need.
